Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Procedures

There are a variety of gastric bypass procedures, all of which involve bypassing a segment of small bowel which in turn decreases intestinal absorption and thus calarie intake. For example, with the Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, a small stomach pouch is created to restrict food intake. Next, a Y-shaped section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch to allow food to bypass the lower stomach, the duodenum (the first segment of the small intestine), and the first portion of the jejunum (the second segment of the small intestine). This operation involves creating 2 joints (anastomoses). This has long term success rates approximating an average of 80% of excess weight loss.

The duodenal switch results in even greater weight loss, with most patients losing 90% excess weight over two years. Single anastomosis bypass procedures also have a role with good results.

These procedures are not discussed in detail here. However, more information will be made available if needed and Dr Valibhoy will be able to work with other surgeons to arrange these procedures.
